maybe you’re struggling to process a death or a breakup. attempting to coexist with a scary and surreal diagnosis. enduring fertility treatment. or coming out. during any tough moment of transition or transformation in life, we sometimes struggle to process the feelings it brings up.
it’s profoundly healing to write your story down. writing helps you grieve. it helps you make sense of what happened. it validates your experience. it gets you to envision your life beyond the awful thing. sharing it in a small, safe, and supportive group lets others bear witness to your life, your truth, and your evolution as a human being. i believe that when life feels messy, overwhelming, and out of control, creating a coherent story out of it is one of the best ways to reclaim your power.
this workshop is designed for people who don’t consider themselves writers, people who do, and everyone in between.
we let your dominant feeling drive the type of story you write. if your story is bleak and dead serious, we might craft a personal essay. if you see humour in it, we’ll turn it into biting satire. if you’re brimming with rage, we might write a brutally honest letter to your unhinged boss (just for you, not for her).
all classes are fully remote to be as accessible as possible.
i’ve experienced a huge amount of grief and loss in my life – major medical trauma, my dad’s severe mental illness, the unexpected deaths of my parents, sibling estrangement, fertility struggles, becoming a mum during a global pandemic. i’ve struggled a lot with feeling safe in the world, in my body, and within my life story. but when i started writing about these things with honesty, vulnerability, humour, and fire, i gradually regained a sense of empowerment and equilibrium, and i’d love to help you feel the same way. i love working with people who are facing something really hard with honesty, openness, and a real willingness to be vulnerable. i believe that headspace and heartspace leads us to create powerful, memorable art that truly helps us heal.
in this 6-week workshop, we’ll meet once a week for 2 hours so you have lots of writing time between sessions. expect a blend of instruction, group discussion and brainstorming, writing exercises, and highly personalized feedback on your work, as well as a summary PDF of each lesson and a suggested reading list of books, articles, and podcasts to deepen your therapeutic writing practice.
